Online news and journalism in South Africa

Media24
The website is very interesting and well designed, with different navigation keys that allow viewers to browse thoroughly. The navigations keys includes home page- where all the stories are usually placed, media centre- details about the organizations. The articles provides an overview of emerging trends and theories in the South African context and the articles reflect on the possibility that online news sites and blogs may represent a space for the creation of online public spheres in South Africa. Media 24 is a big organization on their websites there is a link to all their publications e.g a link to Move! Magazine, Real Magazine and more. There is not much about the new media even though the site does have facebook and twitter accounts. I think the website does not encourage the revolution of social media. It is a very busy site, people comment regularly and people take part in the sites debates. http://www.news24.com
Talk Radio 702
The websites is beautifully designed and it is interesting. I Love the presenter profile; it gives viewers more details about their favourite shows and show people behind the scenes. The website gives more details about the radio station and its programs. On the navigation key the is a key called My 702 which I loved, it is where listeners post their videos, podcast, audios and 702 facebook and twitter comments are, My 702 encourage citizen journalism, it is when an ordinary citizen voluntarily reports, focusing particularly on the public sphere created by bloggers, facebook and twitter. It is also very busy site, people comment regularly and people take part in the sites debates. There is lots of competition taking place and the site makes it easy for viewers to enter those competitions hence there is also a link for all competitions taking place. I love the competition that is happening within the station raging from Redi’s show to Kimono, it gives viewers a sense of involvement in the process of making the show happen. http://www.talkradio702.com
Mail & Guardian online
The website is the same as the hard copy newspaper, its content and structure is the same. The site gives readers a sense of belonging, if you are a fan of the mail & guardian then you will not feel guilty for not buying your favourite paper once you have logged on the site online. I think the site needs radical change and it is just a matter of time before their readers became bored of seeing the same thing over. I think the site focuses on only reporting it does not appeal to the new generation, youth in particular. http://www.mg.co.za
I think there is a new revolution that is happening and that revolution is the new media, online journalism is growing in South Africa, it is growing everyday and soon people will change the way they look at the news together with social networks.
